Make Your Leather Tassel | Instructions

Leather Tassel Instructions

1 - Check you have everything in your Leather Tassel:

  1. Pre-cut and Punched Leather Pieces
  2. 1 x Canvas Cloth for burnishing & protecting
  3. 1 x Binder Clips to help you stitch
  4. 2 x Colours of Handmade Waxed Thread
  5. 2 x Sewing Needles

You will also need:

  • Small pair of scissors
  • A little pot of water
  • Your quality time, ½ - 1 hour

2 - Measure the Thread

Your Leather Tassel has 3 stitching sections, so you will need to cut 2 x 35cm and 1x 50cm lengths of thread. Start by choosing the thread colour that you would like to stitch with, then measure and cut the pieces of wax thread.

3 - Thread the Needle

A. Thread the eye of the needle with the 35cm piece of thread. 
B. Pull through 6-8cm of thread and then pierce the thread.
C. Pierce the thread again at 1cm distance along the long piece of thread.
D. Holding the needle tip, pull down the entire thread. This is called locking the needle.

4 - Fold and Clip

Fold the piece as shown, lining up the holes using one of the included needles and then clipping it in place with the binder clips. Use the canvas cloth to protect the leather.

Stitch 1

5 - Start Stitch

Pull the thread through both holes leaving a 10 cm thread

6 - Secure Stitch

Pull thread through both holes creating a secured lock 4 times, You thread should lead out the same side as you came in.

7 - Tie and Cut

Tie the thread 3 times and cut off excess.

Stitch 2

8 - Clip Piece

Align the piece as shown, lining up the holes using one of the included needles and then clipping it in place with the binder clips. Use the canvas cloth to protect the leather.

9 - Start Stitch

Pull the thread through both holes leaving a 10 cm thread.

10 - Secure Stitch

Pull thread through both holes creating a secured lock 3 times. Your thread should come out on the same side as you came in.

11 - Tie and Cut

Tie the thread three times and cut off excess.

12 - Wrap Tassel

Take your tassel piece and wrap it evenly around the handle. You want to make sure the holes are kept inline!

-Top Tip- 

Use your needle to keep the pieces aligned, Move the needle backwards and forwards to allow for an easy wrap!

Stitch 3

13 - Start Stitch

With your 50cm length of thread. Come up from under the top layer to begin, you will need to leave a 10 cm thread.

14 - Stitch

Take your needle and enter back into the hole you have just come out, this will bring the thread to the top of the tassel. You will need to be careful to make sure you go through all layers to ensure a secured stitch. Go back through into the next available hole and bring the needle back through. Repeat this step 3 times.

15 - Secure Stitch

Repeat step 14 and loop your thread round 1 more time. While bringing your thread through, poke your needle out under the top layer of the tassel to meet your starting thread.

16 - Tie and Cut

Give both threads a firm pull to ensure a tight hold. Tie the thread 3 times and cut off excess

17 - Poke and Neaten

Take your needle and poke away any threads. Use your hands to mold the leather down to sit flush.
